On December 15, 2011, the Global Islamic Media Front (GIMF) released a statement “regarding the distribution of corrupt Asrar al-Mujahidin software.” The communication reported that “Some of our brothers…reviewed a fake copy of Asrar al-Mujahideen Software that included a trojan file, and it is a file for surveillance on computers.” The communique “warn[ed] all the members on what is known as Houri Lovers Islamic Forums, as the statement and fake program was released in this forum, and he who distributed it said that the program was excerpted [from another forum]. And after searching and checking, we didn't find the fake program or the statement to be distributed on any of the forums.” GIMF also cautioned the “brothers that Asrar al-Mujahideen program alone is not enough” and promised that “soon Allah-willing new links will be distributed for Asrar al-Mujahideen program.” Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has explained the purpose of the Asrar software: ”Sending an important message in the old days only required a piece of paper, a writing utensil, and a trustworthy messenger that knows the location of the party you need to reach…However, for the most part, this method has slowly evaporated and is now replaced with the Internet…Its harm is that the spies are actively paying attention to the Emails, especially if you are an individual that is known to be jihādī-minded. So how does one go about sending important messages without it being noticed by the enemy? Following is one method and that is by using an encryption software. One such software is a program created by our brothers called Asrar al-Mujahideen.”
