On November 26, 2010, federal agents arrested 19 year old Corvallis, Oregon resident Mohamed Osman Mohamud, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Somalia, after he attempted to detonate what he believed to be an explosives-laden van parked near a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square. The FBI had been monitoring Mohamud for months and provided him with an inert device. Under the name Ibn al-Mubarak, Mohamud had published several articles in the English-language magazine “Jihad Recollections”, which was edited by former North Carolina resident Samir Khan, who is currently the editor of Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula’s “Inspire” magazine. Mohamud also allegedly submitted an article for publication in “Inspire”. In this article, titled “Getting in Shape Without Weights” and published in the April 2009 edition of “Jihad Recollections”, Mohamud wrote, “the Mujahid who gives victory to Allah’s Deen must fulfill the obligation of preparing himself physically for Jihad, and by the permission of Allah I will teach you some exercises to help you strengthen your body and become fit.” He counseled, “the Mujahid must learn to get in shape and build strength and to continue to do so wherever he is with little or no resources and to be able to use his body and the ground alone to keep in shape.”
