Evan Kohlmann, MSNBC analyst and counterterrorism consultant, reports that since bin Laden's death, al-Qaida's media arm has released eight recordings of al-Zawahiri, not all of which can be easily dated. At least one and possibly two of them were probably recorded prior to bin Laden being killed, then released after his death.

Pentagon and prison spokesman could not immediately provide details about which edition of the magazine reached the camps, whether a captive had actually seen one and how prison camp personnel discovered it. It was first published in June 2010 in password-protect al Qaida chat forums but later emerged in print editions, said Evan Kohlmann, a Pentagon recognized expert on the terror group’s online activities. Kohlmann called the discovery “regrettable” and said he first learned of the security breach in a question Wednesday from The Miami Herald.

Mostafa is believed to have met American militant Anwar al-Awlaki about a decade ago at a San Diego mosque, according to The Washington Post. He went to Somalia in 2005. Federal officials declined to comment. Mostafa was indicted in August 2010 on terrorism charges for allegedly providing material support to al-Shabab. Mostafa has a leadership role inside al-Shabab and serves as a key liaison to al-Qaida, said Evan Kohlmann, who has assisted government investigations into al-Shabab recruiting and financing.

[American Jehad Marwan] Mustapha, 29, is less well-known and has a less public role in al-Shabab, but is likely more influential in the terrorist group, according [to] U.S. officials and Evan Kohlmann, an NBC News terrorism analyst. “Though his name is perhaps lesser known than that of American national Omar Hammami, Jehad Mustapha is nonetheless reputed to be among the very top leaders of the foreign jihadists fighting alongside Shabab al-Mujahideen in Somalia under the banner of al-Qaida,” Kohlmann said.
