On January 25, 2012, Ansar al-Sharia issued a statement explaining the group’s rationale for withdrawing from the Yemeni city of Rada’a. According to the statement, the group “agreed to leave” Rada’a on the condition that city authorities establish a tribal committee to enforce Sharia law, permit Ansar al-Sharia to operate freely, and release more than a dozen prisoners from custody. The statement closed with a warning that if the demands were not met, Ansar al-Sharia “[reserved the] right to take the action” against the violators of the agreement.
