Al‐Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has released the 12th issue of its magazine, Sada al‐Malahem, which includes an article titled “The Huthis: Rafidites with a Zaidi Mask.” In the article, the author discusses the history of Zaidism on the Arabian Peninsula and especially in Yemen, and its eventual mutation that was “true in word but empty in intention” under al‐Huthi. Connecting the Huthis to Iranian interests in the region, the author asserts that “with enormous Iranian funds sent to Huthis, they have purchased weapons and secretly prepared trenches.” The author alleges that “the Shiites are America’s alternative for the rulers in the region. The alliance of the rafidites with the Americans is something only a fool would deny.” The author also writes, “the real cause of the fighting between the Yemeni and Saudi regimes and the Huthis was made clear previously: it is a battle of interests. It is an Iranian‐Gulf struggle in which the cover of sect is used to achieve a greater Persian state, as some Iranian clerics have acknowledged.”
