Shabaab al-Mujahideen: Martyrdom of U.K. National Bilal al-Barqawi in a Drone Strike

On January 21, 2012, Shabaab al-Mujahideen released a statement announcing the death of Bilal al-Barqawi. According to the statement, Barqawi, a United Kingdom national of Lebanese origins, was killed in a drone attack. In celebrating the “martyrdom of this hero”, the statement asserted that Barqawi was among the “first ones to Jihad in Somalia” and was a veteran of numerous Shabaab campaigns. According to Shabaab spokesman, Ali Mahmoud Rage, al-Barqawi fought in Afghanistan and had close ties with 1998 Embassy bombing plotter Fazul Abdullah Mohammed.
