On August 21, 2010, a member of a jihadist forum posted an Arabic translation of a communiqué from the Media Office for the Amir of the Dagestan Front of Russia’s Caucasus Emirate which announced the death of the wing’s Amir and the Emirate’s Qadi [Supreme Judge], Saifullah Gubdensky (a.k.a. Magomedali Vagabov). As the successor to Anzor Astemirov (a.k.a. Said Buryatski), Gubdensky has been recognized as playing a critical role in the planning of the March Moscow metro bombings, as well as various other high profile attacks. The author of the communiqué praises the martyrdom of Gubdesnky as a success for the Emirate and vows that “there will be an Amir who’ll succeed the Amir Saifullah, and he will be stronger and braver, and there will be painful operations by which we’ll terrorize you in Moscow, Sochi and [all of] Russia as there are many surprises Allah-willing.”
