On July 27, 2011, Al-Qaida's As-Sahab Media Foundation released a message from Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri titled, "Glory of the East, the First Being Damascus." Al-Zawahiri stated, “Our brothers and families in ash-Sham of steadfastness and Jihad: Allah knows that if it wasn’t for the heated war we’re engaged in with the contemporary Crusade, and if it wasn’t for the dams and borders Sykes-Picot had drawn out and that our rulers blessed; if it wasn’t for that, my brothers and I today would be with you and in the middle defending you with our bodies and defending you with you chests. But we’re consoled that in ash-Sham of Islam and Martyrdom there are Mujahideen and steadfast ones that are enough and more, so may Allah reward you the best of rewards on behalf of Islam and Muslims.” He added, “Peace be upon the courageous, brave, honorable free ones in Dar’a, Jisr al-Shughoor, Ma’arra’t al-Nu’man, Banias, Homs, and Hamat of heroism and martyrdom; peace be upon you wherever you may be in every inch of ash-Sham of steadfastness and Jihad, confronting the missiles of tanks and bullets of machine guns and helicopters with their bare chests.”
