Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri: “Lamentation of the Sheikh, Amir Mustafa Abu al-Yazid”

In an audiotape titled “Lamentation of the Sheikh, Amir Mustafa Abu al-Yazid”, produced by As-Sahab and released on July 27, 2010, Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri mourned Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, a founder of Al-Qaida who has been identified as “the overall head of al-Qaida Organization in Afghanistan” and who was reportedly killed in a U.S. strike. Zawahiri threatened more attacks against the West in the tape: “O’ American people and O’ peoples of the Crusade alliance: you are paying the price and you’re paying it high. Your leaders are collecting money from the war trade and you are its fuel and victims. We offered you a plan for peace and exchanging benefits, but your governments refused and became arrogant, and [so] the campaigns have continued against you everywhere, from Indonesia to Time Square, passing by Madrid and London. And the campaigns remain continuous and more are coming in succession, with Allah’s grace.” He also urged the Turkish people to “regain the glorious role the Ottoman Empire carried out in defending the Islamic homelands in general and Palestine in particular…The Ottoman State used to send sweeping armies and entire fleets to defend any threatened Muslim area, so how is it that your children’s role is limited to simply sending a ship or a number of ships that get overpowered like cattle in the sea of wolves?” Turning to France, he remarked, “What France is waging as it is spreading in Europe and the West must push us to tightly hold onto our truthful faith to counter their deviational doctrines. We must call our daughters and sisters and mothers to wear Hijab and to support them and defend them. As every Hijab-wearing and Niqab-wearing female Muslim, who defends her Hijab, is a mujahid who defends the rulings of Sharia against the Crusade, secular, Western invasion…The law that was declared in France prohibiting Niqab proves that the Western freedom is its freedom [to choose] in disbelief [in Allah], disintegration, degeneracy, and fighting Islam, and not the Muslim’s freedom in abiding by his religion.”

In an audiotape titled “Jerusalem Will Not Be Judaized”, produced by As-Sahab and released on July 19, 2010, Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri addressed President Obama: “O’ Obama, whether you admit or not, the Muslims have defeated you in Iraq and Afghanistan, and they will defeat you—and the powers that brought you—soon Inshallah in Palestine, Somalia, and the Islamic Maghreb. Not only will you be defeated militarily and economically, but also, most importantly, you were defeated morally and constituently.” He harshly criticized Muslims who applauded Obama’s speech in Cairo despite the fact that “His criminal, invasive forces were occupying Afghanistan, Iraq and the Gulf, and wide ranges in Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, the Islamic Maghreb and Yemen…” He then argues that “we are the greatest reason in losing Palestine because some of us are requesting to unify with the Arab Zionists and call them with prefixes like brother and president…to the end of these falsehoods, in which they realize their own lies.” For Zawahiri, “Arab Zionists are more dangerous…than the Jewish Zionists. Who is sanctioning our people in Gaza and circulates them with a metal wall underground? Who? Isn’t it the head of the Arab Zionists Husni Mubarak?...And who is helping the Mossad in killing the mujahideen and imprisoning them? Isn’t he the Arab Zionist Mahmoud Abbas?” He counsels that “we first have to liberate ourselves in order to liberate what is outside of it; we will not liberate our homelands if we are weak slaves with our fear, incompetence, greed and delusions, with the incompetent rulers and the greedy leaders and the scheming cooperatives and the apostate sheikhs.”

On June 15, 2010, Al‐Qaida’s As‐Sahab Media Foundation published a statement by Al‐Qaida Shura Council member Sheikh Mustafa Abu al‐Yazid (a.k.a. Sheikh Saeed) titled "He Who Prepared a Fighter Has Waged a Battle." In the communication, al‐Yazid, who was reportedly recently killed in a U.S. drone strike, urged Muslims to donate money to the mujahideen, stating "it is our duty O’ Ummah of Islam. Jihad with money is the relative of jihad with soul." Al‐Yazid emphasized the need for funds in Afghanistan to target U.S. and NATO forces: "they [mujahideen] remain offering convoys of martyrs, one convoy after another, longing to fight the Americans crusaders and their allies. And they are not short of men as much as they are short on money, which would allow them to continue their jihad against the enemies of Allah and to attack them as much as they possibly can. As there are hundreds of Muslim people in Afghanistan and Pakistan and others who are offering themselves to the leaders of the mujahideen in order to prepare them for jihad. But there aren’t capabilities to carry them over. And many of the anticipated and well‐studied operations are stagnant because of the shortage of money. Jihad by self and money was obliged on us all."

In an audiotaped message, which was originally previewed via Al-Jazeera in March 2010, Usama Bin Laden warned that on the day “America makes” the “decision” to execute “mujahid hero Khalid Sheikh Mohammed”, “it would have made the decision to execute whoever of you falls as our prisoner.” He also reminded the U.S. that 9/11 proved it is not “beyond the oceans in a haven away from the anger of the oppressed…”

Al-Qaida's central command has issued an official communiqué signed by
Al-Qaida's #3, Shaykh Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, acknowledging and mourning the
killing of Al-Qaida in Iraq leaders Abu Omar al-Baghdadi and Abu Hamza
al-Muhajir in Iraq. Al-Yazid “ask[s] Allah…to accept them amongst the
righteous martyrs and to raise their degrees amongst the gracious [martyrs],
and to bless what they left behind, and to make their martyrdom a light for
His allies and fire against His enemies.”
