Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri: “Message of Hope and Glad Tidings for our People in Egypt, Episode 8

On December 1, 2011, Al-Qaida's As-Sahab Media Foundation released the eighth segment of Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri's "Message of Hope and Glad Tidings to Egypt." In the message, Zawahiri finally acknowledged the recent killing of Al-Qaida leader Shaykh Atiyallah al-Liby in a strike by U.S. aircraft. The statement also claimed that Al-Qaida had captured “the Jewish American Warren Weinstein, the former and current contractor with the American government in the American aid program to Pakistan, which aims at fighting Jihad in Pakistan and Afghanistan.” Zawahiri made a number of demands, including “Halting all kinds of [air] raids by America and her allies in Pakistan and Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia and Gaza” and “Releasing all the prisoners in Guantanamo and the American rendition prisons, and shutting down the [GTMO] prison and these [rendition] prisons.”

On November 15, 2011, Al-Qaida's As-Sahab Media released a new recording of Al-Qaida's top leader Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri titled, "Days With the Imam, Part 1." As Zawahiri explained: “The brothers…asked me to speak about some of my memories with the Shaykh, Imam, reviver and mujahid, restorer of jihad in this time, lion of Islam, Shaykh Usama bin Laden…and to explain the human side of his life that perhaps the general Muslims weren’t exposed to….I requested from the brothers that my talk would be sequencing, meaning, what the mind would offer, as the memories with the Shaykh [Usama bin Laden] are numerous…” According to Zawahiri, Tora Bora "revealed the great cowardice of the Crusaders...they were scared to approach the frontline to fight 300 Islamic lions." In his view, U.S. failure at Tora Bora in 2001 "was the reason that Usama Bin Laden would leave to continue his struggle and jihad afterward." While under siege at Tora Bora, bin Laden reportedly “insisted on recording this speech in this image that you saw to fulfill loyalty to those 19” 9/11 hijackers. Zawahiri also describes the moment when he learned his family had been killed: “my wife had been killed, my son killed and my daughter killed, and he mentioned to me that my three brothers were killed, and many of their families and children had been killed. I retreated and prayed to Allah the Almighty to help me.”

On October 18, 2011, Al-Qaida's As-Sahab Media released a video message featuring top spokesman Abu Yahya al-Liby titled, "Algeria and the Battle of Patience." Addressing the message to his "Muslim brothers in Algeria, and to" his "beloved ones, the brave knights and heroes of the battlefield there...", he stated: "France withdrew its armies but her greed remained and her plans lived on in the joints of Algeria like deadly poisons."

On October 11, 2011, Al-Qaida's As-Sahab Media Foundation released a message from Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri titled, "And the Defeats of the Americans Continue." In the message, al-Zawahiri stated: "Mujahideen attacked America in her homeland in the biggest attack since Pearl Harbor, and then America was defeated in Iraq and was forced to withdraw. And then it was defeated in Tunisia, losing its agent, then was defeated in Egypt, losing its agent there, and then was defeated in Afghanistan...And then it was defeated in Libya, losing its agent there, who joined its war on Islam...under the guise of terrorism, and surrendered all its nuclear reactors." He counseled, "O' people of Libya, you have gained this great victory with your blood and bodies, do not let anyone to take it away from you...There are many scheming to ambush you in order to snatch all or part of this victory from you, headed by the NATO gang in the West." He also said to the "free and honorable ones in Egypt: you raided the Israeli embassy and expelled the Israeli ambassador, running away with your sacrifices, so do not allow him to return. You must continue these popular uprisings until the Israeli embassy is expelled and until the peace treaty with Israel is rescinded."

On September 12, 2011, Al-Qaida's As-Sahab Media Foundation released a message from Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri titled, "Dawn of the Imminent Victory: Ten Years after the Blessed Tuesday Battles." In the message, al-Zawahiri stated: "ten years have passed since the blessed battles on New York, and Washington, and Pennsylvania. That massive, mighty incident shook the pillars of the international crusade and continues to shake it." He continued, "If the Arab peoples are liberated from the chains of fear and horror, who has won and who has lost? The American-allied media claims that Al-Qaida's methodology in confronting the [Arab] regimes has failed, but that media pretentiously forgets that Al-Qaida and most of the jihadist current have continued their efforts for more than a decade and a half, mostly setting aside confronting these regimes, but focusing on attacking the head of international crime, and this methodology, and especially after the attack of September 11, has caused direct American orders to have lost grasp of these regimes on their people. That helped in causing a popular, cumulative movement and mobilization that led to the explosion of the popular volcano, which is the point that Shaykh Usama bin Laden—may Allah have mercy on him—used to assure. He used to assure that as much as we increase pressure on today's madness, America, that will lead to weakening it, and subsequently weakening its cooperatives. So whose policy has really won and whose has lost?" The message also addressed the Libyan people, noting, "...NATO has reached your sky and sea and is getting ready to come on your land, so what have you prepared for it? Have you forgotten what NATO is made of? Have you forgotten about Italy and her crimes in your country? What it has done to your ancestors? Have you forgotten France and what it has done to the Islamic Maghreb and ash-Sham? Have you forgotten who Britain is and what it has done with most of the Islamic World and Palestine?" The video also included a message from Usama bin Laden, who said, "your current president has...warned you about the tyranny of the capitalism of the big corporations, which will practically...continue controlling your main branches of authority, which means that you will become hostages in their hands. The tyranny of capital is more harmful to you and us and the entire world, and this the reason for speaking to you."
